Every year in March or April the Victoria Sketch Club organizes its annual week-long Spring Show to exhibit
the work of Club members. These shows have been a major objective under the Club's Constitution for
more than a century. They are normally held in the gymnasium of the Glenlyon Norfolk school, beautifully
located in Oak Bay, one of Victoria's oldest neighbourhoods.
The annual exhibition featuring around 150 original paintings by members of the Victoria Sketch Club
continues in the footsteps of early members like Emily Carr, Jack Shadbolt, and Max Maynard.
For the members the show is an important annual event. It is their opportunity to display a sample of their
recent work and for the public to view and purchase those paintings. Typically one can view the work of
about 30 participating artists working in a wide range of media, formats, subjects and styles.
Normally 30 to 40 works of art are sold in the Spring Show at prices that include the 7% PST. Since the
show is presented on a break-even basis, the club charges member artists only a small percentage as
commission to defray expenses. The show attracts an ever-increasing number of visitors, many of whom
are returning year after year.
