The Victoria Sketch Club was founded in 1909 and is the oldest continually operating art club in Western Canada. Past notable members include iconic Canadian artists Emily Carr, Ted Harrison, and Jack Shadbolt.
Today our club is a diverse group of about 50 artists, some novice and others professional - all united in the club's purpose of supporting each other in our individual artistic journeys.
While not a teaching club, VSC does offer a supportive and friendly learning environment built on constructive criticism and technical knowledge while respecting individual interpretation. During the fall and winter seasons, the club meets at Windsor Park Pavilion for drawing, painting, critiques, and seminars. Once spring arrives, we meet outside for en plein air sessions at locations in and around the Greater Victoria
area. The fall season includes our up-Island Paint Out Retreat.
A highlight of each year is our March Annual Members Show and Sale - we hope to see you there!

Welcome to our newest VSC member, Lil' Otto the Otter! This cute little guy will feature prominently in our upcoming social media campaign to advertise the March show. So how will Lil' Otto do this? Cast your mind back, way back, to the T.B.N. (Time Before Netflix). Do you remember the Roaming Gnome TV commercials for Travelocity? That Gnome travelled far and wide to various places around the world, and viewers would watch to see where he was next...and yes, the messaging was the same, but viewers still paid attention because we all love the next installment in an entertaining story! Our Lil' Otto will not travel the world ( not just yet!), but he will roam far and wide around town and be photographed in many iconic Victoria locations, some of which we visit during our plein air sessions during the summer. His adventures will reinforce all the information that we want to spread far and wide about our show, while gaining lots of new followers on social media, who will watch for the next post. AND, even MORE exciting news! To crank up the Cuteness Quotient yet another notch, our own illustrator VAL LAWTON will be creating a series of cartoons featuring Lil' Otto. Step aside cat videos - our own little otter is about to Break the Internet!
